I was a stranger...and you called I.C.E...

"and I've been quoted a lot - usually by people who stop reading right before the inconvenient parts."...

The next two images are from a course on the 12 Steps I'm taking this Lent (2026) through Garden City, NY's Center for Spiritual Imagination. They are excerpted from "Breathing Underwater: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps" by Richard Rohr.

A 2026 open letter from 281 Maine faith leaders regarding ICE actions in our state:

“Love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.”

(Deuteronomy 10:19)

As spiritual leaders across Maine, we are writing out of deep concern over the devastating impact of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions in our home.

We stand in solidarity and prayer with our fellow Mainers, particularly with immigrants and asylum seekers who are being targeted by the current ICE surge.

Our sacred texts teach us to love the stranger and urge us toward empathy and welcome, not toward violence and bigotry. Yet across our state, parents are afraid to pick up their children from school, workers are afraid to go to their jobs, and parishioners are afraid to walk home alone from worship services due to the discriminatory and unjust actions being perpetrated by ICE agents.

This sort of terror is not welcome here. We denounce the current operation and call for its end. We also call on all Mainers to act proactively and nonviolently to protect the dignity and lives of our neighbors, embracing the sacred call to love our neighbors as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18).

We encourage all Mainers to educate themselves using resources from ACLU of Maine, Presente! Maine, and Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition ; to use the statewide hotline, 207-544-9989, to report possible ICE actions and to get needed services for those directly impacted by ICE; and to document incidents they witness using these guidelines: "We have rights when documenting ICE."

We join together in prayer and hope that our collective actions of love and community support will help bring about a future where justice and compassion prevail over hatred

None Of Your Business - Salt-N-Pepa

I chose selected lyrics from their song to accompany my immigration theme...

"What's the matter with your life?

Why you gotta mess with mine?

Don't keep sweatin' what I do

'Cause I'm gonna be just fine, check it out

Now who do you think you are

Puttin' your cheap two cents in?

Don't you got nothin' to do

Than worry 'bout my friends? Check it

You're poppin' all that mess only to stress and to spite me

Now you can get with that, or you can get with this

But I don't give a shit 'cause really, it's none of your business

Now every move I make, somebody's clockin'

Don't ask me nothin', will you just leave me alone?

So the moral of this story is, who are you to judge?

There's only one true judge, and that's God

So chill, and let my Father do His job"
