- Wednesday's child is full of mixed blessings
Midweek Blessings I offer this post as a thank you to Jeanette for her weekly Sunday reminders about our blessings... Here's my midweek version: TODAY'S STORY... Last week, I had a delightful encounter with two middle-aged Black sisters over the wording of the rear NY license plate frame on their late model BMW…in front of Witches Brew Coffee House here in West Hempstead. Here’s the bottom of the frame. The top contained 3 Greek letters… I approached them and told them their message immediately reminded me of delight-FULL texts we get each week from a fellow member of our local Baha’i fellowship. Her messages always include reminders of our blessings. I asked if I could take a picture of the plate and frame. The driver said only if my intended audience were members of a sorority or fraternity. So…here’s the bottom… BLESSED! Wednesday's Child Wednesday's Child - Jody Miller (02:44) From the person who brought the Kundalini yoga I practice to the States. And from the Book of the Dead...not the Tibetan one...the Bay Area tome (Robert was the band's main lyricist): Wednesday Addams I loved the original Addams Family TV sitcom (1964-1966) . This made it easy to become a fan of LI's horror Maven Keith Crocker . See "below" for Keith. If you're a fan of animation (sounds classier than "cartoons"), here's a link to the trailer based on the original series. Last week, when the NYU-Langone neurology team attached electrodes to my head (see upcoming post), I was reminded of a regular routine Zacherley would do in his laboratory: Affix electrodes to cauliflower "brains" and put them through their paces. Add electrodes to the following image and you get the picture. Oh, this picture adds some "FINGER FOOD." Here's a good 9-minute video tribute to John's career . - Hungering & Thirsting for Justice...Clean Water
I started these reflections after a topic that was presented at our July Men2Men's monthly men's circle in Brentwood. It was entitled "I THIRST. " This morning's August council speaker continued this theme...So, I took it as an opportunity to keep reflecting... Dr. King's quote is from the following Smithsonian article: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Smithsonian Water Quality In our circle this morning, several men shared their personal experiences of being in remote arid places in this country and feeling thirsty, accompanied by concerns that their water needs might not be met. For many on our shared planet, this fear is a daily occurrence. Looking further, we find people all over our shared planet are also victims of water pollution. Thirst For Justice trailer (03:23) - Cinematters: NY Social Justice Film Festival Pete Seeger's Activism Pollution of the Hudson River Main article: Pollution of the Hudson River The Clearwater and the Clearwater Festival have worked to draw attention to the problem of pollution of the Hudson River . Pollution in the river has included mercury contamination and sewage dumping, but the most discussed issue has been General Electric's contamination of the river with Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) between 1947 and 1977. This pollution caused a range of harmful effects to wildlife and people who eat fish from the river or drink the water. The activism of folk singer Pete Seeger and the Clearwater led to the area being designated as one of the Superfund sites. In the next video, we see "Teach Your Children" being practiced during a field trip on the Clearwater: "No child left inside" Naturally, music and singing were important parts of the day's curriculum: "We need the river...the animals need the river..." - -"and little children will lead us..." - Fire on the Mountain: Picking coffee beans on the side of an active volcano
These caffeinated-induced epiphanies have been percolating since my friend Pedro told his tale from his youth in Guatemala. Now, enjoying my first cold brew from Witches Brew Coffee House in West Hempstead, I'm at the keys to tell his story...Of course, it'll be accompanied by humor and music... Muse, lead on! Dedicated to the crew at Witches Brew Coffee House where I enjoy my daily cup o' Joe, to Mary C M Phillips for her inspired wordplay at cafeinnatedepiphanies.com , and my longtime friend DoryAnne - who brews a great cup and my neighbor Mike who first introduced me to Witches Brew. Go Up to the Mountain... Pedro grew up on a farm in Guatemala . One morning, his father took him on a long bus ride into the mountains to help him pick coffee beans - to supplement the family's income. He was about 10 years old. Their destination was a coffee bean field on the side of an active volcano... As you watch this video, I'm sure you'll have a deeper appreciation for Mother Earth and all her helpers who work together to bring this sacred bean to your local coffee dispensary (Rx). May they be fairly compensated for their labors... Timoteo had a dream... Timoteo Minas grows coffee in the shadow of an active volcano in Guatemala . Volcán de Fuego has been erupting more frequently in recent years, but Timoteo is not stressed at all. In fact, there’s no place he’d rather be. Both the high altitude—his farm sits 6,300 feet above sea level—and the nutrient-rich volcanic soil are good for his plants and give his coffee a special taste. - Reclamation Efforts: Give back what you stole from us: Our lands, our cultures & our names on your vehicles & sports teams
A few months back, I had a conversation with someone about how members of Native American peoples find vehicle nameplates that use various tribal names and references as offensive. -->>>If you agree with their perspective, please share this post on your social media channels. Examples (from the second article below): "The most obvious cars named after Native American tribes are Jeep’s Cherokee and Comanche. But don’t forget Chevrolet’s Apache, Pontiac’s Aztek, and the entire Winnebago brand. In addition, over a dozen more automakers use place names that were tribe names first." "Pontiac certainly didn’t shy away from the native origins of its name. This automaker released the Pontiac Aztek, Pontiac Chieftan, Pontiac Star Chief, and Pontiac Super Chief. I mean, its logo is even an arrowhead." I began to learn more...went online and found a lot about this...from Native nations throughout our shared country. Here are two articles. Some background: "Sunrise" was written and sung by the only female member of the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux , who was with the band from 1972-1979. The song is about a Native American medicine man named Rolling Thunder , who spent a lot of time with the Dead. "'Sunrise' is about sunrise services we attended and what Rolling Thunder would do," Godchaux said on the Songfacts Podcast . "It's very literal actually. Rolling Thunder would conduct a sunrise service, so that's how that came about." Donna Jean Godchaux wrote this song on piano after Jerry Garcia asked her to write a song for the Terrapin Station album. She said it just flowed out of her - music and lyrics - and was one of the easiest songs she ever wrote. The drumming at the end of the song was played by a real medicine man. "We cut it in Los Angeles, and he came and brought the medicine drum, so what you hear on the end is the real deal," Godchaux told Songfacts. "It was like a sanctuary in that studio when he was playing that. It was very heavy." There is a nod to this song on the back cover of the Terrapin Station album, which merges Native American imagery (an eagle feather) with the Grateful Dead bones. SOURCE: Songfacts Rolling Thunder... Copyright © 1958 by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Reprinted with the permission of New Directions Publishing Corp. SOURCE: PoetryFoundation.org Eileen and I watched this film a few nights ago... About [from the trailer below] This definitive documentary is an incisive portrait of literary polymath Lawrence Ferlinghetti. In one-on-one interviews, he reflects on events that began to unfold in postwar America -- including the publication of Ginsberg's Howl, Burroughs' Naked Lunch, and Kerouac's On the Road -- as well as the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and the founding of City Lights. Ferlinghetti reads his poems, discusses his activism, and offers unguarded insight into nine decades of his life. Features appearances by Allen Ginsberg, Dennis Hopper, Dave Eggers, Bob Dylan and more. FERLINGHETTI: A REBIRTH OF WONDER - Theatrical Trailer (02:12) MATERIAL WHILE WE'RE IN THE WAITING ROOM A likely reason for my attraction to the poem is the use of its "WONDER." See, a song "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart" with the same word "wonder" in its lyrics became the inspiration for the name of my website. He begins by sharing his own inspiration for it... Us (Us, us, us, us, us) and them (Them, them, them, them) And after all, we're only ordinary men Me (Me, me, me, me, me) and you (You, you, you, you, you) God only knows it's not what we would choose to do (To do, to do, to do) "Forward!" he cried from the rear And the front rank died The general sat and the lines on the map Moved from side to side Black (Black, black, black, black) and blue (Blue, blue, blue, blue) And who knows which is which and who is who (Is who, is who, is who, is who) Up (Up, up, up, up, up) and down (Down, down, down, down) And in the end it's only round and round (round, round, round), and round (round, round, round, round) "Haven't you heard it's a battle of words?" The poster bearer cried "Listen, son," said the man with the gun "There's room for you inside" I mean, they're not gonna kill ya So like, if you give 'em a quick short, sharp, shock They won't do it again Dig it? I mean, he got off lightly 'Cause I would've given him a thrashing I only hit him once! It was only a difference of right and wrong, innit? But really, I mean good manners don't cost nothing, do they, eh? Down (Down, down, down, down) and out (Out, out, out, out) It can't be helped, but there's a lot of it about With (With, with, with, with), without And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about? (About, about, about, about?) Out of the way, it's a busy day I've got things on my mind For want of the price of tea and a slice The old man died SOURCE SOURCE SECOND SET Meanwhile, in a city that never sleeps... "Abyss Road"...
