"What are you waiting for" (music) **************************************************************************************************** Introducing the Center for Action and Contemplation Sending along some mindful resources to enable us to find some light in this season of growing darkness, including some reflections from Richard Rohr and the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) - the person and group that's most influenced my journey of spirit...by enlarging my vision through introducing me to appreciate how other spiritual traditions sit before the mysteries of life...and...death...and rebirth... darkness ...and... light ... Through these associations: I found the wisdom of the 12 Steps ...initially through Richard's "Breathing Underwater: Spirituality and the 12 Steps " I became part of "Men2Men" - a monthly men's group that gathers regularly in Brentwood on 2nd Saturday's to sit together and share how these ways of seeing are helping our individual and collective journeys. With my wife Eileen , we formed a monthly "Gathering" group that meets in our home to share our lives as we chew on topics related to Richard's offerings... Email link about these events and more... Who We Are Franciscan Richard Rohr founded the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in 1987 because he saw a deep need for the integration of both action and contemplation—the two are inseparable. As Father Richard likes to say, the most important word in our Center’s name is neither Action nor Contemplation, but the word and . Contemplation is a way of listening with the heart while not relying entirely on the head. Contemplation is a prayerful letting go of our sense of control and choosing to cooperate with God and God’s work in the world. Prayer without action, as Father Richard says, can promote our tendency to self-preoccupation, and without contemplation, even well-intended actions can cause more harm than good. OUR VISION "Transformed people working together for a more just and connected world." Instead of accusing others on the left or the right, Jesus stood in radical solidarity with the problem itself, hardly ever offering specific answers to the problem. Instead, his solidarity and compassion brought healing.  In today’s religious, environmental, and political climate, our compassionate engagement is urgent and vital. When we experience the reality of our oneness with God, others, and Creation, actions of justice and healing naturally follow. If we’re working to create a more whole world, contemplation can give our actions nonviolent, loving power for the long haul. Our Teachers (read more about each here) Brian D. McLaren, Dean of Core Faculty James Finley, Core Faculty Barbara Holmes, Core Faculty Richard Rohr, CAC Founder and Emeritus Faculty Cynthia Bourgeault, Emeritus Faculty CONTEMPLATION and ... • W. Hempstead Historical Society: Why study her_story...his_story? For our children...

”Many of today's youth think the world began the day they were born.” Reader: These reflections are mine and might not represent the perspectives of other members of the Society... So said my friend Gregory yesterday morning at the Old Westbury Diner, where we had gathered with other friends from our old South Ozone Park/Richmond Hill neighborhood. WHHS Facebook Page The Value of ORAL History While school history courses present the past, what's missing is being in the presence of the people who actually lived it.  When I was completing my BA in sociology at Cal State Fullerton in 1975, I took an oral history course. It provided me an opportunity to meet with a woman of Japanese descent, who as an American citizen , was interned during WWII in a POW camp in California. Hearing her tell her story there in her living room is a memory that will remain with me forever... Here are places where Eileen and I hear first hand living-room stories of how fellow members have been treated and mistreated because of their race, country of origin, religious affiliation or other reasons… Multicultural Solidarity of LI Friendship Circles members of the Baha’i Faith that we get together with regularly near Bayshore , at the Bayard-Cutting Arboretum (weather permitting) and in nearby Valley Stream As I’ve said, Eileen and I have benefited so much from being in the same living rooms and kitchens with people “different” from us. In these spaces, we’ve discovered how much we have in common…and the outward appearances of the “others” just disappears. We find that we have many similar dreams for ourselves, our families and our friends. At the same time, we get to experience and share in the fun of discovering new foods, music and lifestyles. That’s why teachers in the Memphis-Shelby County public schools, as racially isolated now as they were when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed school segregation, have launched a curriculum to introduce their students to the 13 children who helped integrate these Tennessee city schools in 1961." We have the opportunity to share our stories with today's young people. It would be worth it if only 1 person's life is changed because of our time with them.  I held out this expectation a few years ago when, at the request of Mark , a friend who worked there, I spoke about my CAReer path to future auto technicians in his Nassau BOCES class. In sharing our stories... HOW WE GET THERE can be as significant as what we ended up doing. This encourages EXPLORATION ... EXPERIMENTATION … DREAMS ... Places to Share our Stories: The Family Dinner Table Family dinners were another place where young people heard family members’ stories - which were prolific in large and extended families like some of my companions at yesterday morning's breakfast. These included 3 brothers who had 10 other siblings under the same roof…around the same dinner table… While in my home, Herman and Catherine Tittmann set out place settings for me and my 6 other siblings... • Veterans for Peace...Peace Veterans...

VFP GOLDEN RULE PROJECT The Golden Rule is a project of Veterans For Peace. We aim to advance Veterans For Peace opposition to nuclear weapons and war, and to do so in a dramatic fashion. We have recovered and restored the original peace ship, the Golden Rule , that set sail in 1958 to stop nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands, and which inspired the many peace makers and peace ships that followed. The reborn Golden Rule  is sailing once more, to show that nuclear abolition is possible, and that bravery and tenacity can overcome militarism. Grateful Dead perform "The Wheel," "I Need a Miracle" and "Uncle John's Band" simulcasted from Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY to the Farm Aid concert in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986 . Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001. "The Wheel" and "Uncle John's Band" both contain sober reminders of our human existence. If you're a "newcomer" to the band's lyrics, simply follow the bouncing ball... Song's background: Background and lyrics The song is a dialogue between the last man and woman left alive following an apocalyptic catastrophe .[2] Dobson stated that the inspiration for "Morning Dew" was the film On the Beach , which is about the survivors of virtual global annihilation by nuclear holocaust. Dobson wrote the song while staying with a friend in Los Angeles; she recalled how the guests at her friend's apartment were speculating about a nuclear war's aftermath and "after everyone went to bed, I sat up and suddenly I just started writing this song [although] I had never written [a song] in my life".[3] SOURCE I selected this cover version because it features a woman soloist....At this point in my life, I believe we men should hand over the reins to the folks that bring life into our shared world. • Multicultural Solidarity Celebration: Songs, Poems, Dances...

One of the groups I enjoy being with is Multicultural Solidarity of Long Island and their Diversity Friendship Listening Circles. Our in-person gatherings have enabled me to meet people from many backgrounds other than my original one... I've sat in the presence of folks from other countries like India and South and Central America. Had my first experience at the Shinnecock native American reservation on Eastern Long Island. Met folks from the Long Island Baha'i community and continue to enjoy their indoor and outdoor gatherings. During these heart-opening experiences, we shared food and our stories. FACEBOOK Link For this evening’s live celebration, they asked people to share some original art: songs, poems, dance… A few weeks ago, I replied to one of the event organizers that I mostly create posts on my blog and haven’t penned any poems or songs. She encouraged me to try my hand at a short piece of prose… I kept her request before me, trusting that if this was to a helpful learning experience, something would emerge… Earlier this week it did… it did … it did… …including this morning’s inspiration…3 times… I decided to do 3 blogs to give me some room to grow beyond 3 “short pieces”…Those who know me know that #music belongs... Here are the links to the 3 posts, plus a bonus post... Your god is too small... • "It's not dark yet...but it's getting there..."

The second in a 3-some prepared for tonight's sharing of our various art forms with fellow members of Multicultural Solidarity of LI Friendship Listening Circles. Click here for links to the other parts. This one originated as the result of an email I sent inviting someone to come to our event. She's a veteran of struggle who grew up with horrendous discrimination in the South. The honest words she sent back about her ongoing efforts to address these wrongs inspired these next words and songs... Lillie, Thank you for these words from your heart 💕 They recall words from songs about darkness and light: “It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there…” “The darkest hour is just before dawn…” Bob Dylan - Not Dark Yet (Lyrics Video) (06:29) "The darkest hour is just before dawn..." Bob Dylan - Meet Me in the Morning (Official Audio) (04:21) Back to my conversation with Lillie... Lillie, Because of your words, I now know what I’ll be sharing at Friday evening’s Multicultural gathering. In the meantime, I’ll be on the lookout for a song about light to encourage us for the days ahead… tOM  POSTSCRIPT... My posts take life as they sprout from initial seed to full flower... When I mentioned this event and my musings about darkness to my Feldenkrais teacher, Lisa told me of this Carl Jung perspective: "Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness's of other people. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely. Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart." Walking into the LIGHT... Here's a hope-filled song to bring balance to the darkness. I had the pleasure of enjoying Snatum at Kundalini Yoga of Long Island and in NYC at a workshop with her book  "Original Light." I was first introduced to her at Echo Park  here in West Hempstead, NY.  During our kundalini yoga classes, Elena our teacher played her in every class. During my home practice, I entered her name into the search engine so she would accompany me. Those searches led to recommendations about similar artists... ...and my musical soul took f l i g h t ...
